In response to SeaMonkey actually there was an increased limit allowed in one species. years ago we slaughtered the school size dolphin(maui-maui), we would catch 2 to 3 hundred a trip and the biologists got concerned over the harvest and most of the gulf states instituted a limit of 25 fish per angler. then the biologists realized or rather discovered that dolphin only live 3 or 4 years! and the 25 fish limit was removed, today there is no limit on dolphin(maui_maui). in the waterfowl world the limit on ducks has both been restricted and expanded over the years based upon the annual waterfowl counts by the u.s. fisheries and wildlife service. so there is hope that as long as we conserve our redfish population there might be a chance for an increase in the creel limit on reds. personally i don't fish for reds unless that is all that i can catch due to dirty water, cold water, or unless i just want something for the grill! ed mcintyre |

In response to SeaMonkey sea monkey, a few years ago, before katrina, dr. fred deegan who was with the bmr said that there had been a large decrease in half-dollar and dollar size crabs in their seine and trawl tests, he believed that it was due to the increased redfish population. i talked with the biologists from lumcon, which is the louisiana universities marine consortium, the four biologists that i talked to said the same thing, that there was a definite rise in the redfish population. now whether or not this will lead to an increase in the redfish limit, i don't know and they didn't either. the interesting thing about the mississippi gulf coast is the number of big money redfish tournements, most of the winners go to my backyard, buras, empire, venice to catch their fish and then they bring them back alive to mississippi to weigh in, and then they are released alive. i wish that they would tag them before they release them, then we could really learn something. i know they will never find their way back to louisiana, but they should help the stock of fish in mississippi in two ways one of course would be the numbers and the second would be the change in genetic makeup of native mississippi redfish. kinda like introducing a prize bull to an old inbred stock of cows. ed mcintyre |

Awesome weekend to be on the water...we left 830 on Saturday morning and ran 90 or so miles out to the Apache rigs...within 15 minutes on getting our trolling spread out we pulled in a very fat 20lb Blackfin Tuna ...from there we headed to the Alabama Alps and trolled up several more tuna..they were hitting on anything pink and a pink mini bird daisy chain with a cedar plug painted in YFT colors ran in the center way back in spread...we did that for a couple hours before heading to RAM Powell. We got there at 5pm and trolled with no success...the water died down at sunset and was flat all night...we started jigging at sunset...we were using both Williamson and shimano butterfly jigs...different colors, different sizes from 4oz to 12oz...although the glow in the dark jigs did the best...at about 7 pm, the BFT bite turned on and didn't stop til midnight...we had 4 tuna on at once and boated them all...what a wild night ...midnight to dawn was slow...no yellowfin..a couple sharks...tried chunking, jigging, dropping down live hardtails etc...nothing...took a nap and at 5 am we put the trolling spread back out...within minutes we had more BFT on the line...It was a great night to be on the water...final tally...5 sharks, 1 small Amberjack, a barracuda, and 21 Blackfin Tuna...a long but happy ride home sunday afternoon... |

I am no biologist, but In my experience, the redfish population along the Mississippi coast has seemed to exploded over the last several years. They have, no doubt, made a huge comeback. I am 38 years old and have been fishing these waters since I was big enough to hold a fishing rod. In my 30+ years of fishing I can not remember a time when they were so abundant. I often wonder if thier population continues to increase, will other species, such as speckled trout, be able to compete. Maybe CCA, the CMR, and the Gulf Council should put steps into place that may lead to an increased catch limit sometime in the near future. Anyone else have any thoughts on this subject? |

We Got a late start Sunday evening and headed for Back Bay. We didn't get to the spot until 5:00. It took a few minutes to find them but we got on a solid bite and put 14 keepers in the box and 6 throwbacks before dark. The fish were in about 6feet of water and they seemed to only want suspended baits with the catch 2000 getting the most action. |

as for telling folks where you caught them messing up other folks, forget that idea. there are a many, many folks who use zeiss and bushnell fishfinders. these optic fishfinders work without batteries or transducers, and they appear to work for the users. i see folks using them all the time down cocodrie way and down home in buras. best bet camo your boat. ed mcintyre |

In response to keepyourfish2yourselfplease How many people do you think really knows about this site and here's another thing most people that do read this site they don't know how to fish the place that you and i fish and if i could fish during the week i would. I'm guessing you are a commercial fisherman. How can i keep people from seeing me catch fish when them big sows wont stay under water and YOU HAVE TO USE THE NET.You know how it is here people see three or four boats together and before you know it your swamped. If anything is exposing this spot its the cell phone I cant tell you how many phone conversations Ive overheard with they're biting down here then another boat shows up."PLEASE" don't take it that I'm trying too start anything with you because you are a dedicated fisherman as i am.I just want to know one thing how is my posting of my weekend hurting you during the week. |

GCUFISHERMAN! Keep your fish to yourself and you won't have to worry about all those people crowding you! There is no such thing as courtesy these days. If you catch a fish and someone sees it your spot is done. That's how people who don't know what they're doin catch fish.I don't fish on weekends because of people like you encountered.I also catch fish where u are catching them but it is on weekdays. By telling everyone on here u are hurting me as well as yourself. Hopefully u learned a good lesson today! |

Another beautiful day on the water and even more crowed than yesterday. Started out slow but the bite picked up a little after 12:00 started putting trout in the boat until someone decided they had to be right on top of me to catch fish. Don't get me wrong i don't mind someone fishing next to me but when someone moves in your line of fire chunks the anchor far as he can throw it with the motor running that's too close and after 15 minutes of fishing when he didn't catch anything with his "dead" shrimp he leaves so that spooked the trout for a little while but did manage to put a limit together back home by 3:00.They weren't big sows like yesterday but there were some nice ones today. |

Had the Tyler Kohen group from Macon, MS this past Saturday. With the cool water I opted to take the boys on a little different type of fishing trip. Tired of slow action on trout and reds we went bottom fishing. Loaded down with sinkers, hooks and dead shrimp. We hit a few oyster beds looking for hungry fish. Hit paydirt on the first stop of the morning. Spent the entire day catching sheephead, black drum, rat reds and founder. Not much to it and the boys had an absolute ball. Tyler has been with enough times that something "different" was right up his alley. Ended the day keeping 20 sheephead, 1 slot red and 1 flounder. Released countless puppy drum, 1 thirty six inch drum, tons of rat reds and a few smaller sheephead. The non stop action was just what these boys were after. The weather is getting right and we have plenty of open days. |
